Congrats!

Congrats are in order for our champion, Matt Peterson, and to our Nutmeggers; the Prown-Coleman clan and the former CT residents the Smith-O'Hearns. Are there more Connecticutarians among us? If so, accept my hearty congratulations.  Trust me, I'm being sincere here. I'm not a bitter, Big 10-loving, perennially disappointed hoop fan.

Dang.

It's over: it's Matt in a more or less wire-to-wire walkover.

Freundles,

Well I'll be. This is a first, at least as far as my fading memory can recall. Nobody picked either national semi game correctly (really? Kentucky and UConn? An 8 and a 7? What the what?) Among other things, that means that nobody stands to score even a single point in the final game. I don't see myself making much of an effort to watch. It's that really, not at all that I finished in 19th place and Maggi finished in 3rd. Ugh, it's going to be a long spring and summer around here.

But (and not to be grudging about it) today is Matt's day. He's your 2014 Pool Winner, friends. Our own Matt Peterson, the Clooney/Kennedy/Newman of our pool. (That's Paul Newman, not the guy from Seinfeld.)

Matt! Matt! Matt! I wonder what forfeit his lovely bride Liz will now have to perform. I hope it's appropriately degrading. Congrats, Matt. You sucked slightly less than the rest of us.

So, below then, I'm reproducing the standings from Round 4, the regional final round. I've added Semi and Championship columns to make it look official, but nobody's getting any points in either R5 or R6.

It's over, man. Oy. Thanks for playing, everyone.

Matt & Liz, sitting in a tree, p-i-c-k-i-n-g...

All right people,

That ^$(#*^%&^& Matt Peterson is just laughing at us now. He's so far ahead I'm not sure anyone can catch him. Liz has fallen to 3rd behind a surging Bill O'Hearn (now there's an image), whose spousal unit, Diana Smith, is also flying to the top. I hope there's a side bet or two out there; this is a good year for them.

Here's where we stand:

Two games today: Dayton (?!?) v. Florida and Wiscy v. Arizona. As a public service and a reminder, here is a chart of who picked whom.

Good luck out there, people.

The Rise of the Power Couple

Damen und Herren,

[Say, how do you like my Hogan's Heroes German? I'm awfully proud of it.]

Look, people, I'm not going to kid around with you here. There's one and only one headline in the pool this morning. Check out the top of the leader board, and there you will find Matt and Liz. Matt and Liz! Like Hill and Bill, like Franklin and Eleanor, like Antony and Cleo, like Captain and Tennille, our power couple stands stride the world. Often, and I'm not putting forward any theories here, married couples exhibit a striking parallelism in their picks. Not in this case, however. Matt and Liz followed two different paths to the top. Shocking, isn't it?

Other auspicious pairings? Well, Bill and Diana sit at 10 and 3. Ken and Kristin at 3 and 15. Kate and Scott are tied for 7th. Sarah B. and Tim are 18 and 6. The rest of the pairings, including mine, have at least one partner wwaaaayyyy down the list (that's me, you see). But 1-2 for a married couple? This might be unprecedented this late in the proceedings. Congrats to you both.

In other news, we'll get those of you who don't have blog access an invitation soon. Thanks for that, Mike. Let's have a little chatter out there, and good luck with your Friday picks.

And a Matt shall lead them...

All,

Can anyone rid me of the meddlesome (or troublesome or turbulent - what did Becket really say?) Matt Peterson? It's still Matthew Nancy Fitzgerald Kennedy Kerrigan Peterson lapping the rest of the field, disappointing ambitious Poolites and upsetting the normal uxorial harmony of his household. I wonder if he knows just how selfish he's being.

The top 5 placeholders here all had big weekends, with scores ranging from 20-24 points out of a possible 32. That's some good picking, especially in this wacky year. Congrats to you all.

We have a few new entrants this year. I am pleased to introduce to you Kristin Davis (Scott Silet's beloved sister), her husband Ken Taylor (who is currently not observing our tradition of new Poolies staying at the bottom of the rankings for a couple of years) and Will Taylor, their son. Welcome, friends.

As the week progresses I'll post a chart of upcoming picks, so all of you bitterly watching the standings (or is that just me?) can play the home version of our game.

And now for the human interest portion of our Pool. Has everyone seen this amazing story about the ACC championship game crasher? It's awesome. Read it here.

Can Knott storm back to win? Not a chance, sadly.

Pool 2014

Welcome to Pool 2014. We're all currently tied for first place. It's a brand new rainbow unicorn day, man.
